Here’s a question to ponder: If amalgam fillings, which contain mercury, are safe, why is mercury considered one of the most toxic substances on the planet?

Here’s another question--would having mercury-based dental amalgams fillings in a warm place, such as the mouth, involved in chewing, drinking and swallowing affect the rest of the body? And what happens if an amalgam filling breaks or cracks. . .is any of this really safe?

If you’re suffering from a broad range of systemic symptoms and have amalgam fillings, you might want to see if these dots connect in order to save your health. Although mainstream dentistry considers mercury-based amalgam fillings safe, there might be more to the story that can be hindering you from ever getting better until these fillings are removed from your teeth. Mercury toxicity may be the root cause of your multiple symptoms, so keep reading. . .

Approximately 180 million Americans have amalgam fillings, which are about 50% mercury. What health risks might mercury pose from your mouth and beyond?

Mercury toxicity has been linked to systemic poisoning, impacting every bodily system. Some adverse health issues include gastrointestinal inflammation, heart disease, endocrine disruption, birth defects and neurological diseases.

Mercury is a toxin, and toxins are poisons that could be at the root cause of today’s chronic diseases, resulting in health issues that impair the body’s detoxification processes. The digestive tract is hit the hardest by toxins, beginning with the initiation of leaky gut syndrome, also called intestinal permeability. When the intestinal tract has gaps or holes in the epithelial barrier, pathogens, bacteria and toxins have an easy pathway to enter the bloodstream via the gut and result in systemic inflammation, which could be the root of autoimmune dysfunction and serious illness. Leaky Gut is associated with liver disease, heart disease, both types of diabetes, mental health issues and much more, according to research.

Mercury is an enemy of your gut, directly destroying the epithelial cells of your digestive tract. This damage to the gut lining has been shown in studies to be caused by mercury.

But mercury toxicity doesn’t just end there. It also creates an imbalance in your gut microbiome, killing off colonies of good bacteria that help ward off pathogens. Amalgam fillings are also associated with candida overgrowth and parasite infections for this reason. Where there is heavy metal toxicity, there are pathogens, as these invaders are attracted to heavy metals, feed them while poisoning the good bacteria associated with a healthy microbiome.

Mercury binds with sulfur. Sulfur is a powerful antioxidant, responsible for a multitude of biochemical processes in the body, including destroying free radicals and helping the body detoxify. Sulfur is instrumental in the production of glutathione, the body’s master antioxidant. With sulfur being stuck to mercury, it can’t be available to protect and defend multiple systems, including the blood-brain barrier. Mercury increases the inflammatory response in the body, depletes the functions of important enzymes, as well as other antioxidants, resulting in a system vulnerable to the effects of free radicals with few defenses against them. Inflammation caused by mercury toxicity can also impair nutrient absorption. In other words, the body is being poisoned and not able to obtain vital nutrients to protect it from the poison. In addition, detox pathways become blocked, increasing the potential for toxic overload.

The result includes mystery symptoms associated with toxicity AKA poisoning. These include abdominal pain, nutrient and vitamin deficiencies, chronic fatigue, digestive problems, joint pain, hair loss, skin issues such as rashes, acne, infections that won’t heal, candida overgrowth, parasitic infection, IBS, heartburn, hormonal imbalances, mood swings, anxiety and depression, migraine headaches, weight gain and much more. Left unmanaged, autoimmune diseases may arise, such as Crohn’s disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Sjogren Syndrome, for example.

Dental toxicity may also cause other systematic symptoms, such as tinnitus, nerve damage, neurological tremors, brain fog, swollen lymph nodes, allergies and asthma, cardiovascular inflammation, blood pressure fluctuations and arrhythmia and respiratory issues such as a chronic cough and frequent respiratory infection.

Of course, resolution of symptoms cannot occur without first removing the poison. Amalgam fillings can be removed and replaced with a nontoxic compound, but should be done carefully as to not overload the system with further mercury toxicity. A holistic or biological dentist is trained in proper removal of toxic mercury fillings. Once the root cause has been addressed, systemic detoxification may begin.

Detoxing Heavy Metals

Certain foods can help the body detoxify from heavy metals. High vitamin C in fruits and vegetables help the body eliminate toxins.

Fruits such as blueberries contain salicylates, a plant constituent that naturally reduces inflammation. They also possess antioxidants that help protect cells from further damage. Blueberries help detoxify and cleanse the brain, in particular.

Root vegetables and herbs, such as garlic and onions, help the body to detoxify due to their Sulfur content.

Both cilantro and chlorella when eaten together remove heavy metals stored in your system. This combination is effective in binding heavy metals and helping to excrete them from the body, eliminating retoxification.

Cilantro and chlorella, when taken together, can remove approximately 87% of lead, 91% of mercury and 74% of aluminum within 5 weeks, according to studies.

Supplements that help promote heavy metal detoxification include:

Nrf2 Boost:

Help assist the detoxification process by supporting your Nrf2 pathway.

Our Nrf2 Boost contains ingredients that support detoxification, provide antioxidant benefits and reduce systemic inflammation. These ingredients include turmeric and green tea extract, resveratrol, glucoraphanin (broccoli seed extract) and myrosinase (radish seed extract).

Glutathione GOLD:

The removal of harmful, chemical substances that do not naturally occur in the body, or other substances that have reached dangerously high levels is one job of the master antioxidant, glutathione. Such foreign chemicals and excessive other substances are called xenobiotics.

Glutathione acts chemically on many types of xenobiotics to neutralize and transform them into compounds the body can eliminate. Other xenobiotics are neutralized and eliminated when glutathione joins them (conjugates). One of the liver's vital functions is deactivating and eliminating xenobiotics. Enzymes in the liver act on xenobiotics through a series of chemical reactions, preparing them to bond with a compound that can escort them out of the body. Glutathione drives this process.

Our Glutathione GOLD is in s-acetyl form, providing the greatest bioavailability, withstanding stomach acids for greater absorption via the small intestine. Studies have shown that s-acetyl glutathione is nearly as equivalent in efficacy to IV glutathione.

Leaky Gut Defense:

To help repair the damage left behind by mercury toxicity, consider addressing the gut junctures and accompanying inflammation with our Leaky Gut Defense. With natural ingredients that help your body self-repair the gut mucosal lining, soothe, protect and defend the digestive tract from pathogenic invaders and help rebalance the microbiome, this formulation can make great systemic impacts--from your gut and beyond.
