Fighting the Flu

This is not as a substitute for professional medical prevention, diagnosis or treatment. Consult with your physician, pharmacist or health care provider before taking any home remedies or supplements or following any treatment suggested by anyone.

You Can Fight The Flu
Good nutrition is the best bet against getting the flu. Eating leafy greens, fruit and cruciferous veggies will power-pack your immune system.

Taking probiotics, cod liver oil and vitamin D3 (MUST WATCH 6 minute video on how to avoid the flu–CLICK HERE) everyday will super-size your odds of staying healthy.

Colds and flu enter the body through our noses, eyes and mouths. Washing your hands with soap and water is another good flu and cold prevention.

A flu shot is no guarantee that you won’t get the flu.

What If You Get The Flu?
Okay, you’ve done all you can do and someone in your family still gets the flu. I never get a flu shot, but many do. Studies have shown the flu vaccine is only 50 percent effective. You could be like my neighbor who got the flu shot and still came down with the flu. I personally don’t feel the potential complications (neurological complications, gastrointestinal problems, etc.) are worth the risk of a flu vaccine.

Signs Of The Flu
All flu viruses cause a respiratory illness that can last a week or more. Flu symptoms include:

  • A sudden fever (usually above 101°F or 38.3°C)
  • Chills and body shakes
  • Headache, body aches, and being a lot more tired than usual
  • Sore throat
  • Dry, hacking cough
  • Stuffy, runny nose

Fighting The Flu
At the FIRST sign of the flu you can weaken it’s effects and lessen it’s duration by having these products on hand. I stress having them in your home, for a couple of reasons. First, if you or a child gets the flu, you may not be able to get to the store. Second, when they are in your cupboard, you can start taking them immediately when symptoms appear: increasing the likelihood of nipping the flu at the very beginning. Also, I look for the best price when purchasing supplements. I find I usually get a better price online.

Check the dosage recommendations for children. When I feel a cold or flu coming on, I take a couple drops of Elderberry Extract or Oregano Oil every couple of hours, followed by a glass of water.

Elderberry Extract
Elderberry Extract, Sambucol, short-circuits flu symptoms according to studies. In fact, this is the number one supplement recommended for the flu. One study showed that 93 percent of flu patients given Sambucol were completely symptom-free within two days. Those taking the placebo recovered in about 6 days.

Oregano Oil (Oreganol P73)
Oregano oil’s active ingredient is a natural infection fighter which can kill viruses and bacteria. Some say it can even fend off bird flu and hepatitis. Oregano oil has been used medicinally for thousands of years. The highest quality medicinal oregano oil, oreganol P73, is extracted from Mediterranean wild oregano. Ancient Greek physicians used oregano to treat a variety of illnesses.

Following are the recommended doses of oregano oil for children:
1) For children aged 6 months to 2 years – Oregano oil should not be given internally to children in this age group. Instead, rub 1 drop of the oil mixed with 2 drops of olive or coconut oil on both feet. If they already have a cold, congestion or fever, apply the oil on each foot and cover it with socks. You can do until the condition improves but only up to a maximum period of 10 days.
2) For children aged 3 to 6 years – Taking oil of oregano internally for this age group is not recommended either. But you can increase the amount of oil you can apply on both feet to 2 to 3 drops. In addition, there is no longer a limit on the number of days you can do this. If the child already has a cold, fever or flu, apply the oil to the feet and cover them with socks before bedtime.

Grapefruit Extract
Grapefruit Extract is antibacterial, antifungl and antiviral. Laboratory tests have shown that grapefruit seed extract will kill many microbes, including: streptococci, staphylococci, salmonella, p seudomonas, giardia, lysteria, legionella, helicobacter pylori and capylobacter jejuni. A couple of drops are usually taken in a glass of water or juice. Check the directions on the bottle.

Grapefruit Extract is commonly used to treat candida and yeast overgrowth such as thrush. Diaper rash is also a yeast overgrowth. You can use grapefruit seed extract diluted on baby’s bottom.
